Throne Speech Delivers for Saskatchewan

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                                                                                   19  OCTOBER 2007

OTTAWA, October 18, 2007 – The Government of Canada outlined a strong vision for a better Canada in the Speech from the Throne, which will continue to deliver real results for the people of Saskatchewan, according to Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz.

“This government has listened and produced a plan that focuses on delivering on the priorities that matter to the people of Saskatchewan,” said Minister Ritz, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Battlefords-Lloydminster. “Our government is united through strong leadership that will build on existing commitments and generate new opportunities for people in Saskatchewan and across Canada.”

The Speech from the Throne sets out the government’s agenda for the new session of Parliament and will focus on five clear priorities; strengthening Canada’s place in the world, building a stronger federation, providing effective economic leadership, continuing to tackle crime, and improving the environment.

A highlight for Saskatchewan is the government’s recommitment to biofuel development. Biofuel development means new markets for our farm families, new opportunities for our rural communities, and a cleaner-burning renewable energy source to protect our environment.

This Speech from the Throne will deliver real action for all Canadians with broad-based tax relief for individuals, businesses and families – including following through on our commitment to a further cut to the GST.

“Canadians expect their government to work for them and we’re working hard to do that,” said Minister Ritz. “We’re working with Canadians to make our communities safer and provide the tax relief people need.”
