Motion to Ban Replacement Workers Struck Down
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 30, 2009
OTTAWA –
Battlefords-Lloydminster MP, Gerry Ritz once again stood up for Canadians and
voted against M-294, a motion that seeks to ban replacement workers.
Similar to
previous votes, MP Gerry Ritz continues to advocate against this type of
legislation. The lone federal Liberal from Saskatchewan, Ralph Goodale, has
voted against these kinds of proposals in the past, however, yesterday, he took
refuge in old Dion-style tactics.
“Despite
the vocal encouragement from other members of parliament, Liberal House Leader Ralph
Goodale, sat on his hands and abstained from this important vote,” said Ritz. “I’m
puzzled as to why he refused to represent his constituents; I guess it’s just
hard to kick old habits.”
Independent
university studies have concluded that prohibiting the use of replacement
workers during work stoppages may be associated with more frequent and longer strikes.
“There
is no evidence to support that the position of prohibiting the use of
replacement workers would lead to better labour relations, higher wages, or
better working conditions”, says Ritz.
