Long Gun Registry Information Misuse
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 24, 2009
OTTAWA – Battlefords-Lloydminster MP Hon.
Gerry Ritz and the Conservative Government have warned for years about the
misuse of private information collected through the long-gun registry. Today it was revealed that personal information
was wrongly given to a private polling company without the Government’s
knowledge.
“As a
law-abiding gun owner, I’m outraged that a private polling company has obtained
the confidential personal information that belongs to me and my constituents,”
says Ritz. “Despite our warnings, the
Liberals and NDP continue to turn a blind eye to the misuse of the long-gun
registry, and now law-abiding Canadian citizens are paying for their mistake.”
The
Conservative Government has tried repeatedly to get rid of the gun registry,
but has been consistently blocked by the opposition parties. Canadians know that the long-gun registry is
ineffective, a waste of taxpayer money, and in infringes on the rights of law
abiding long-gun owners.
“The
Liberals and NDP persist in their defence of this wasteful registry,” says Ritz.
“It does nothing to address actual crimes being committed.”
The
Conservative Government explicitly disapproves of the use of long-gun owners’
personal information and we remain committed to repealing the long-gun
registry.
