Liberals Try to Block Aid for Farmers
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 25, 2009
OTTAWA – Canada’s
Conservative Government passed vital tax measures to help drought-stricken
farmers last week despite the fact that Liberal Members of Parliament tried to
block the initiative.
“Conservatives put Farmers First in our agriculture policies because
many of us have deep roots on the farm and we know our producers are a cornerstone
of the Canadian economy,” said Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz. “It’s outrageous that Wayne Easter and the
Liberal Party are willing to play political games with farmers’ livelihoods.”
Canada’s Conservative Government passed tax deferral measures on
September 18, 2009. Producers in drought stricken areas will not have to pay taxes
on income from cattle they are forced to sell because of feed shortages if they
replenish their breeding stock the following season. This means cattle producers will be able to
weather the immediate hardship of drought and maintain the cash flow they need
to rebuild for the long term.
Right now Canadian farmers are demanding to know why Liberal Members of
Parliament voted against this vital initiative for Canadian farm families.
“The Liberals have once again made it clear they would rather make a desperate
power grab with an unnecessary election instead of working for Canadian farm
families,” said Minister Ritz. “Farmers
want us to continue strengthening our agricultural sector and rebuilding the
Canadian economy.
“Canada’s Conservative Government will always put Farmers First in all
of our agricultural policies as we make sure the Canadian economy comes out of
the current economic uncertainty stronger than ever.”
