Bill C-273
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 11, 2009
OTTAWA –
The Government of Canada is working hard to do what is right for Canadians says
Battlefords-Lloydminster MP Gerry Ritz.
“C-273 is
a bill that seeks to require motor vehicle manufacturers to provide access to
the information and the tools required to repair newer model vehicles” says
Ritz.
Traditionally
independent car-repair shops have provided a cost effective alternative to
dealer service. Currently there are restrictions on the access to training,
tools and information on newer car technologies, these restrictions puts local
car service centres at a clear disadvantage. In April 2009, the Minister of
Industry sent a strongly worded letter to all automakers asking them to develop
a voluntary accord here in Canada. There
has been progress.
Representatives
of both vehicles manufacturers and the aftermarket industry met last month to
begin discussions on the development of a voluntary accord. The National
Automotive Trades Association, the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association,
and the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers of Canada have
all strongly endorsed this voluntary process to guarantee a competitive
marketplace.
“While I
support Bill C-273 in principle, it is clear that the Bill needs significant
review. I anticipate seeing the
amendments that will be put forward during the committee stage to further
improve the Bill,” says Ritz. “Ultimately we need to look at the best possible
solution to ensure a fair, efficient and competitive marketplace for Canadian
consumers,” Ritz concluded.
