REPORT FROM PARLIAMENT

As the holiday’s draw closer, I’m sure that many of you have already given thought to where and with whom you will be spending your time.  As we plan for gift exchanges, family visits and community celebrations, it is easy to lose sight of what Christmas is all about.  Regardless of our faith or beliefs, almost everyone can relate to the spirit of giving and joy that Christmas brings.

For our families, the past year has been about meeting the challenges created by the global recession. Businesses have seen a decline in sales and increases in costs, putting pressure on workers and their families.  However, despite families facing difficulties, our future looks bright.  Recently, we’ve seen some positive economic news, and coupled with the strong foundation of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, we are well positioned to enjoy a more prosperous tomorrow.

Over the past few months, your Conservative Government has continued working to strengthen Canada’s economy.  We are delivering support for families, businesses and communities with the goal of helping them manage through today’s short-term challenges, while laying strong groundwork for future success.

Our proactive measures are helping families to face ever-changing economic realities.  For self-employed Canadians, achieving prosperity in business can sometimes mean putting aside other priorities like raising a family or caring for a sick loved one.  That’s why your Conservative Government is helping to give self-employed Canadians additional security by allowing voluntary access to Employment Insurance special benefits.  These benefits include maternity, parental, sickness and compassionate care benefits.

As we gather to enjoy the company of friends and family this Christmas, let us a moment to think of our brave men and women who are serving in Afghanistan and in on other missions around the world.  Let’s remember those who are sacrificing time away from their families in the name of peace, security and democracy.

From my family to yours, we wish you a Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year.
