REPORT FROM PARLIAMENT

Well, that was certainly an historic, if not brief, fall session of parliament. And in the two weeks following, the theatrics continued. We’ve seen the three Opposition parties make a coalition list of names and check it twice despite the support of very few Canadians. We’ve seen the former leader of the Opposition telling the Governor General he’s been so good this year he should be given the role of Prime Minister.   When that didn’t work, he resigned, for the second time. We’ve seen the NDP leader with visions of cabinet seats dance in his head – and likewise the Bloc with regard to seats in the Senate. We’ve seen two Liberal leadership contenders drop out and pave the way for the party elitists to appoint their next leader, who signed the lump-of- coal-ition and may or may not necessarily have a New Year’s resolution to bring down the government.

Seriously though, while much of the focus was on the Liberal party problems and postulations, I can assure you that the work of government has not stopped.  In fact, things are at a fevered pace that will continue right through until Parliament resumes on January 26. Our government is working hard to develop a budget that keeps our economy strong. It will build on the important measures we’ve already taken and is being delivered within the shortest time frame of any federal Budget in Canadian history.

Politics aside, the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is upon us.  I’m sure you’ve been enjoying Christmas plays, pageants and socials and are busy shopping, wrapping and preparing to spend time with friends and family. I know Judy and I look forward to spending time with our children and grandchildren over the holidays, to relax and enjoy all that the season offers.

I am pleased to also have the chance to visit with folks throughout the riding and hear what you have to say about Canada’s current economic and political situation. I welcome your thoughts and ideas whether you are a farm family, business owner, senior or student, as we move toward the next session of parliament.

At this special time of year it’s important to remember those who serve others.  Our thoughts are with our brave men and women in the armed forces, many of whom must spend their holiday separated from family. Closer to home, our riding is rich with great citizens who reach out each Christmas, no matter their own situation,  to help friends, neighbours and even strangers in need. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all those of you who have found the time or resources to give to others this holiday season.

To all my constituents, I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year.
