REPORT FROM PARLIAMENT

National Parks are a natural hive of activity for families looking to enjoy Canada’s diverse landscape. Parks offer places to hike, to camp, to swim and to fish. The Park system allows families and individuals to explore our natural environment, and learn about our nation’s history.

I have come to appreciate the significance of the Canada’s national parks.  These parks are protected for the appreciation, enjoyment and understanding of the general public.  The park system has existed in Canada for well over a century, and has allowed large stretches of land to remain in its natural state.

That is why your Conservative Government made it a priority to invest in Parks Canada sites through Canada’s Economic Action Plan. Earlier this year we presented a budget with nearly $40 billion to stimulate Canada’s economy during the global economic recession, and to help create jobs this year and next.

Among many other investments, our Economic Action Plan provides $75 million for improvements to visitor facilities in our National Parks and Historic Sites, and an additional $75 million for the protection of our National Historic Sites.

I cannot mention Historic Sites without highlighting the Fort Battleford National Historic Site. Fort Battleford was established in 1876 and was a key region during some of the most pivotal events in western Canada’s history.  It commemorates the important role that the North-West Mounted Police played in the development of the west.

To encourage Canadians to visit National Parks and Historic Sites your Conservative Government has frozen the entry fee for this year and the next.  Our investments will help preserve, enhance, and promote our heritage, and give families a destination where they can enjoy outdoor activities together.

As a Member of Parliament, I have had the opportunity to see and visit many regions within Canada.  Our country is truly blessed with unparalleled ecological resources, spectacular scenery and inspirational historic places.  I encourage you to take the opportunity this summer and spend some time at a Historic Site or a nearby National Park and see just a little of what Canada has to offer.
